Sonia R. Mathur, NCC, MA

THERAPIST

“Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know.” - Pema Chödrön

Sonia (pronouns: she/her) is a National Certified Counselor who holds a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University, specializing in Children and Adolescents. She deeply believes in the transformative power of genuine human connection and strives to build therapeutic relationships rooted in mutual respect and authenticity. Sonia is dedicated to creating a safe, warm, and empowering space where clients can explore their vulnerabilities, process painful experiences, and grow into their best selves.

Being a South Asian American woman and child of immigrants, Sonia has a unique bicultural perspective that enriches her multicultural approach to therapy. She views clients holistically, understanding how the intersections of their identities shape their experiences and interactions with the world. Employing a multicultural feminist approach, Sonia helps clients gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the systems affecting their lives. Her eclectic methodology is tailored to the specific needs of each client, drawing from psychodynamic therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Adlerian principles, narrative therapy, and relational-cultural approaches.

She frequently incorporates creative techniques to assist clients in exploring their identities. Sonia enjoys working with clients of all ages but specializes in treating children, adolescents, and emerging adults. Before joining Nosh Family Therapy, she interned at Phoenix Clinic, where she primarily served Chicago’s communities of color and honed anti-racist, inclusive, and accessible therapeutic practices. Sonia also has experience in public PK-12 education, collaborating with educators and families within school systems. Her background also includes nonprofit management, and she is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served in Tanzania from 2016-18. She speaks English, Hindi, and Swahili.

She is supervised by Nosheen Hydari, LMFT.
